¿Sabías que hablar otro idioma te hace más inteligente?

Según un artículo del New York Times, hablar otro idioma nos hace más inteligentes. Laura Linares nos explica estas y otras cuestiones, como por qué el inglés es uno de los idiomas más fáciles de aprender.

Did you know that being able to speak another language makes you smarter?? It can have a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia in old age.

If you can communicate in English, you can contact people from all over the world, travel more easily, push your career forward, gain technical knowledge, have a better access to culture…

Do you think English is difficult? We are going to show you that learning other languages, like Spanish or French, is much more difficult than learning English. In fact, if English is one of the most spoken languages in the world it is because it is one of the easiest languages to learn and use. For instance, English doesn´t have special symbols such as ñ or ç, or written accents, so that’s a good point. Regarding to verbs, Spanish and French have a different way to express the action depending on the subject, in English, most of the tenses are similar.

When acquiring a language, one of the most difficult things is the plurals. In English, but a few exceptions, you just have to add an s. Articles don’t have gender, as they do in other languages, so we only have to learn “the”, no matter if the noun is masculine or feminine.

Maybe you think that English is boring, but that´s because you haven’t found your motivation yet. In fact, English makes us happy. The more you learn, the more you enjoy it. Our progress makes us feel great. English gives you a better access to culture. For example, even when dubbed versions are high quality, watching American and British films in the original is much better. Translations are very good, but there are cultural things that are untranslatable, so watching the original not only helps you with your language skills, but also to know the other culture in a closer way.

How many times you have desired to understand what your favourite singer wants to express with his/her lyrics? Hundreds? Thousands of times? And how many times you have been searching on the Internet and you have got stuck because the info was in English? Would you like to be able to chat with people all over the world? Don’t limit yourself in a world where English is the key which opens the door to your knowledge.
